Have you ever awaken from a dream confused about what you just experienced — chalking it up to being a combination of meaningless circumstances?
Have you ever experienced re-occurring dreams that felt like a mystery that needed to be solved?
Have you ever thought there was more to your dream life than you were taught?

“Dreams have the power to enrich your human potential, give you direction, a sense of purpose and guidance on living intentionally. Across cultures and time, dreams have been revered as a tool for personal growth, self-discovery and spiritual development.”
[ Nani, Darie. ]
When I hear people disregard their dreams as just some random mashup of visions as they sleep, it tells me that these people aren’t listening or paying attention to the guidance their being given from their higher selves. They may even be scared to look into the depths of the symbols or situations that show up in their dreams — they also may be too confused and overwhelmed to even begin to try to decipher themselves.
Although research shows that — as Black people — we pay at least as much attention to dreams as our white counterparts, we’re seriously under-represented in the dream movement and in dream science; in addition to this, our dream culture has hardly been touched upon — by either white or Black authors. [ Shafton, Anthony. ]
With the world burning around us, governments being brought to their knees & high-profile scandals from the underbelly of society being exposed in the light of day — it is imperative that we take ownership of our dreamwork because our dreams deliver the truths needed to navigate, not only our external world, but our internal world as well; existing as a form of wisdom that seems to be removed from time — coming straight from the divine.
Real talk though, I really be wondering if the dream realm is where our souls existed before being birthed into this realm — and where we go to after we transition from this reality; or maybe it serves as a sort of mirror to this world.
My first recurring dream that I remember from childhood pertained to my father and the truth of his presence in my childhood and the years to come.
The dream would begin in my childhood home, on Cedar Street in Long Island, where I would descend the stairs in high anticipation of my father coming to see me. When I went to open the front door, my eyes would light up when I saw this long, black fancy limo pull-up in front of the house and my excitement would reach an ultimate high; especially as he got out of the limo and I anticipated the best day of my life.
To my surprise and immense disappointment, my father would always walk up to the front door and past me to go straight into the living room to sit and watch television — completely ignoring me. This recurring dream sobered my expectations of him for a long time to come.
Unfortunately, when I would give him chances to redeem himself, my heart would be shattered every time; like him ghosting my calls while I was homeless and desperate for his help as I sat in the New Orleans Greyhound bus station during the peak of COVID.
Because of my dreams, I honestly can’t say I wasn’t warned.

“Understanding the power of dreams, you can delve deeper into your inner world and explore the depths of your mind. You can use this newfound understanding to improve your life and gain greater insight into yourself. Whether you’re looking for personal growth, self-discovery, or simply a better night’s sleep, the power of dreams is there for you to tap into.”

My dreams usually serve as warnings, guidance, wake-up calls or cryptic previews of my future. Because my dreams have aided me in such significant ways, I know for a fact that being able to decipher dreams is a spiritual asset on your journey that you should never ignore.
On my journey in this lifetime, my dreams have given me clear discernment in deep ways, proven my intuitive nudges, allowed me to communicate with my transitioned loved ones and inspired my movements forward in life, which forced me to shift my mindset; they’ve shown me the truth of close relationships and friendships that were faulty as well.
“Symbols are the bridges between thinking and being. Symbols are the language.”
[ Andrews, Ted. ]
It’s an interesting concept when it comes to thinking of your subconscious as a separate entity from your conscious mind, as it communicates in the ancient language of symbols. So, when dreaming, your subconscious is crafting the architecture of its messages to your conscious mind with the “bricks” of symbols that have a specific significance to your experiences in this lifetime thus far.
“A symbol both hides and reveals — placing the responsibility for our growth & its consequences in our own laps; we must come to understand our own symbology……study the symbols you use in your day-to-day life, to gain greater insight to the symbology within your dreams to discover the method that your subconscious mind uses.”
[ Andrews, Ted. ]
For years, on and off, I’ve recorded my dreams in various dream journals — when I go back to my recorded dreams every now and then, they always bring some form of insight, confusion and altered perspective on my past experiences or even events that came to pass.
Interestingly enough, I’ve seen major influences on the visual details my dreams when I place certain configurations of crystal grids under my pillow as I sleep; my favs including Selenite, Lapis Lazuli, Obsidian & Amethyst — just to name a few.
Making your dreamwork more of a ritual elevates the experience of exploring yourself in a way that’s extremely sacred.

The subconscious mind is a mysterious force that impacts both our conscious thoughts and behaviors. It controls much of our decision-making processes, which often remain hidden from us. As such, it’s essential to understand how it works in order to make changes in our lives. By unlocking its magic, we can gain insight into ourselves and create meaningful change.

Utilizing dreamwork as a divination tool comes pretty naturally to me, with respect to my astrological natal chart — which is a key piece to understanding how dreamwork may manifest for you personally — especially with my Sun sitting in my 8th house of Gemini and my Pluto sitting in my 12th house of Scorpio.
In dissecting the placement of my Sun in the 8th House of Gemini — as it pertains to my journey as my own ‘Dream Shaman’ — there is a spotlight on working behind the scenes, the information of hidden secrets, and what the subconscious is communicating through dream symbols; such as divine messages of wisdom meant to assist me in crafting the most beneficial reality. This resonates with my practice of dreamwork journaling by writing every detail I can remember from the dreams that I’ve had.
The placement of Pluto in my 12th house of Scorpio manifests as extremely vivid and clear dreaming that feels like this reality, dark dreams that have involved psychic attacks, horrific scenes of death, the underbelly of humanity’s collective subconscious and intense sexuality — as well as possessing a powerful intuition and having the capabilities of healing & spiritual guidance that are deeply engrained from past lives; these facets of my 12th house placement sit on a foundation of mysticism, alchemy and sorcery, which resonate with my practice of utilizing crystal grids as I sleep as a form of manipulating my ability to remember the details of my dreams.
As you become your own ‘Dream Shaman’ it is necessary to understand that as you dive into your dreamwork practice and create rituals around it you will be performing ‘Dream Alchemy.’
According to Ted Andrews, author of ‘Dream Alchemy’ —
“…it is the process of learning to control and direct the dream state and all its energies so that we can better come to know ourselves on all levels. Once you’re able to analyze and decipher your dreams you’ll be able to incorporate the messages and lessons given from your higher self into your current reality.”
[ Andrews, Ted. ]
By focusing on your dreamwork rituals, with the goal of transforming your reality, you are stepping onto the path of becoming your own ‘Dream Shaman’ — embracing the courage to guide yourself on a vision quest through your subconscious and through the realm of darkness to meet and incorporate your shadow as you shift the reality of your daily life.
Have you been remembering your dreams lately? What symbols keep popping up?
